How to Build a Data Search:

1. Select 1 to 4 topics

  • Topics are grouped into categories. (For example, school attendance rates, scores on the MCAS tests and school enrollment are all under Education K-12).
  • Click on the plus sign to see all topics in a category.
  • To select a topic to view associated data and corresponding graph, click on the topic and it will become highlighted yellow.
  • To unselect a topic, click on it a second time, and it will turn back to white.

2. Select Geographies

  • You may compare municipalities, districts and the region by choosing multiple geographies.
  • Not all data is available in all towns, schools and state-wide.
  • To select a geography, click on the topic and it will become highlighted yellow.
  • To unselect a geography, click on it a second time, and it will turn back to white.
  • Select all available geographies by clicking the word All. All the names will be highlighted yellow.

3. Select Years

  • By default, we will show you all available data over all the years we have available.
  • If you’d like to look at certain years, you may select those by clicking on a year and highlighting it yellow.

4. Review your choices.

  • In each of the three selection boxes, you will see your selections listed.
  • You may edit your selections by clicking on the drop down lists again.

5. Submit and View the Results

  • Finally, submit your search and wait for your data to be listed on the next page. At the top of the subsequent page, your data will be graphed over time (if available.) A table of data is displayed below your graph.
  • You may save the graph image (click on the link “Download this Graph”) or the data (click on the links “Download this Data”). The graph is a JPG. The data is CSV (comma separated values).

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why doesn’t my graph show?

You may not see a graph if you only have one data point. (For example, only one year’s worth of data is available.)

Why do I only see “Berkshire County” in the Geographies list for my topic?

Becuase our data comes from different sources and varies by topic, not all data is categorized by municipality or by school district.

About the Data Clearinghouse

image Data is used by everyone from school administrators, to state senators, to non-profits.  The ability to have “good” data on which to base decisions and proposals is critical to making the “right” decisions regarding program structure and financial investment across a range of community issues.  This clearinghouse provides a central one-stop-shop for those who need data on the region and promotes data consistency, quality, and accessibility. It also enhances efficiency by eliminating the redundancy that exists today as numerous entities each gather and maintain the same data on the region.

A primary outcome of this is a more detailed and accurate picture of the region in a variety of applications such as marketing materials, grant applications, and numerous other documents and purposes.  All data listed on the clearinghouse is screened for quality and consistency to control for data for which there may be inconsistent reporting by source for various reasons.  This helps reduce conflicting statistics or inaccurate data on the region.
